ExpressVPN is an industry-leading VPN service provider. It supports a variety of secure communication protocols, which makes its services very robust and flexible. Sometimes, we may need to manually switch the specific type of security protocol to fit our needs, but how can we to do it? In fact, it’s pretty simple. Here’s a quick explainer.
Let’s take the ExpressVPN client on Apple’s iPhone (version: 7.9.1) as an example. First, click on the hamburger menu (three crossbar icons) in the upper left corner of the app’s main interface, and then navigate to settings, VPN Protocol. Here you can see the following four options:
- Automatic
- UDP
- TCP
- IKEv2
Automatic here refers to the automatic selection of protocols by the app, which is the default option. The next three are alternative protocols to choose from, and we can click on the type of protocol according to our needs (for example, we can click on IKEv2 VPN protocol, which sometimes can offer superior connectivity than other protocols under poor network condition, especially for Chinese users). After selecting, if the app prompts: “Are you sure?”, simply click “change Anyway”.
Once the protocol has been modified, return to the main interface and re-click the circular button to connect.
